The refractive indices of enamel, dentin, cementum and calculus were measured as 1.625±0.024, 1.534±0.029, 1.570±0.021 and 1.896±0.085, respectively. The dental calculus lead strong scattering property and thus the region can be identified under enamel with SSOCT imaging. An extracted human tooth with calculus was covered by gingiva tissue as in vitro sample for SSOCT imaging.

Speckle Noise Reduction for the Enhancement of Retinal Layers in Optical Coherence Tomography Images

Introduction One of the most important pre-processing steps in optical coherence tomography (OCT) is reducing speckle noise, resulting from multiple scattering of tissues, which degrades the quality of OCT images. Materials and Methods The present study focused on speckle noise reduction and edge detection techniques. Statistical filters with different masks and noise variances were applied on ...

Subgingival calculus imaging based on swept-source optical coherence tomography.

We characterized and imaged dental calculus using swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT). The refractive indices of enamel, dentin, cementum, and calculus were measured as 1.625 ± 0.024, 1.534 ± 0.029, 1.570 ± 0.021, and 2.097 ± 0.094, respectively. Dental calculus leads strong scattering properties, and thus, the region can be identified from enamel with SS-OCT imaging. An extracte...

Three-dimensional Image of the Human Tooth Based on Optical Coherence Tomography

A method of acquiring clear three-dimensional image of human tooth in vitro, which is based on optical coherence tomography, is described. The background noise of the cross-section image is eliminated by image preprocessing algorithms, then the threedimensional image is reconstructed by ray-casting algorithm and gives the whole view of dental crown which contains dentin and enamel. A plane can ...

Feasibility Assessment of Optical Coherence Tomography-Guided Laser Labeling in Middle Cranial Fossa Approach

Introduction: Different approaches have been developed to find the position of the internal auditory canal (IAC)in middle cranial fossa approach. A feasibility study was performed to investigate the combination of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), optical coherence tomography (OCT), and laser ablation to assist a surgeon in a middle cranial fossa approach by outlining the internal auditory ...
